Rajasthan leads in Solar power installation on Railway Stations

Rajasthan, with 275 railway stations, leads the country in having the largest number of railway stations with installed solar power plants. This information was given by the Union Minister of Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, in the Lok Sabha on 2nd April 2025. 

According to the government of India, during the financial year 2024-25, 25 gigawatt (GW) of renewable energy was added in the country, of which 6 GW was solar energy. 

The total installed solar power capacity in the country has increased to 21 GW as of 31st March 2025.

Renewable Energy Plan of Indian Railways 

• The Indian Railways has set a plan target to achieve 100 % electrification by 2025-26.  Railways have a target to become net-zero carbon emitters by 2030. 
• The railway expects to meet its power demand through renewable energy with a mix of solar and wind energy.
• The railway will meet its renewable energy demand through a long-term power purchase agreement with various independent power producers.
• It will also install solar power plants on the rooftops of its stations and utilise its vacant lands.
• The Indian railways plans to install solar plants of 20 GW solar power plant by utilising its vacant land by 2030. 

2249 Railway Stations have Solar Power Plants 

According to the Railway Ministry, a total of 2249 railway stations in the country had installed solar power plants as of February 2025.

With 275 railway stations in Rajasthan having solar power plants, it leads the country in having the highest number of railway stations with installed solar power plants.

Maharashtra was in the second place with 270 railway stations in the state that had installed solar power plants.
