Know Your Weaves Campaign 2025 Launched Ahead of National Handloom Day

The Union Ministry of Textiles launched a week-long “Know Your Weaves Campaign 2025” on 1st August  2025, to promote and raise awareness about the country's rich handloom weaving tradition. The annual campaign is a precursor to National Handloom Day, which has been observed in the country on 7th August since 2015.

The campaign was formally launched in New Delhi on 1 August 2025 by Ms Neelam Shami Rao, Secretary, Ministry of Textiles.

Aim of the Know Your Weaves Campaign 2025

The week-long campaign, from August 1 to 7, 2025, will be held at the National Crafts Museum & Hastkala Academy, New Delhi.

The main aims of the campaign are as follows:

• Display India’s rich and diverse handloom heritage by showcasing the diverse and exquisite weaves from across the country.
• To raise awareness and foster pride in the country’s rich handloom heritage, especially among school children, university students, and others.
• The campaign aims to encourage schoolchildren to visit the exhibition and appreciate the country's handloom heritage.
• The campaign also brings the accomplished artisans, designers, students and handloom enthusiasts under one roof.

About the National Handloom Day 

First National Handloom Day - 7 August 2015.

The Union Ministry of Textiles organised the National Handloom Day event at Chennai, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended.

Background 

• The 7th of August was chosen as National Handloom Day  by the government to commemorate the historic Swadeshi movement, which was launched on 7 August 1905.
• Krishnakumar Mitra's Bengali journal, Sanjibani, proposed boycotting British goods and promoting Swadeshi goods as a sign of protest against the British government's decision to partition Bengal.
• The idea of Swadeshi was approved at a meeting at the Calcutta Town Hall on 7 August 1905.

About the 11th National Handloom Day 

The Union Ministry of Textiles will organise the11th National Handloom Day event on 7 August 2025 in New Delhi.

President Droupadi Murmu will be the Chief Guest of the event, where the winners of the  Sant Kabir Awards and the National Handloom Awards will be felicitated.
