Ahmedabad in Gujarat to host the Asian Weightlifting Championships 2026

Gujarat’s largest city, Ahmedabad, will host the forthcoming 2026 edition of the annual Asian Weightlifting Championship from 1-10 April 2026. This was announced by the sports governing body in Asia, the Asian Weightlifting Federation, on 27 May 2025.
Ahmedabad was not the original venue for the 2026 Asian Weightlifting Championship. Gujarat’s capital city, Gandhinagar, was originally chosen by the Asian Weightlifting Federation to host the 206 edition of the Asian Weightlifting Championship at its annual Congress held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in 2024. But later, it was shifted to Ahmedabad.
The 2025 Asian Weightlifting Championship was held in Jiangshan, China. India was represented by Dilbag Singh in the 96 kg weight class, and Seram Nirupama Devi competed in the women’s 64 kg weight class.Both of them failed to win a medal at Jiangshan.
India will be hosting the prestigious continental-level Asian Weightlifting Championship for the second time.
It hosted the Asian Weightlifting Championship in 1982 as part of the 1982 Asian Games held in Delhi.
The first Asian Weightlifting Championship was held in 1957 at Tehran, Iran.
The 2025 Asian Weightlifting Championship will be the first championship to be held under the International Weightlifting Federation's new weight classes.
The Asian Weightlifting Federation was established in 1958 in Tokyo, Japan, as a constituent of the International Weightlifting Federation.
The Asian Weightlifting Federation is the sports governing body in Asia, and it organises continental-level championships in Asia.
It is also affiliated with the Olympic Council of Asia.
