Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay launched the Thai Maman Thanga Mothiram Thittam (Thaimaman Gold Ring Scheme) on 28 September 2026 at Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai. He gave one-gram gold rings to newborns and put rings on three babies himself, in front of their mothers.
Only babies who meet the conditions above get the ring, so it is not for every child born in the state. It is a keepsake for the baby, not a cash benefit. The government wants to celebrate childbirth and honour motherhood.
In Tamil, Thai Maman means the mother's brother. In traditional Tamil families, the maternal uncle has a special role at a child's birth and gives gifts to the newborn, a custom known as Thai Maman Seer. Under this scheme, the state takes up that role and gives the gift.
Babies born between 22 June and 28 September are not left out. Their rings are being given through 107 hub centers across the state, at a planned pace of 100 babies per day at each hub. Babies born after the launch get the ring at discharge from the hospital.
The Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation handled the procurement. Joyalukkas and Kalyan Jewellers have received the work orders and will supply the rings in a 70:30 ratio. The cost covers the gold as well as making, hallmarking, insurance, and transport.
Tamil Nadu has about 7.8 lakh births a year, and around 4.2 lakh of them take place in government hospitals. The scheme is planned for about 4.41 lakh babies every year. The first batch has 1.28 lakh rings, which will be used first for the initial distribution, including babies born from 22 June.
The reasons are cultural and health-related. The ring is based on the Thai Maman Seer tradition, which brings a familiar custom into a welfare scheme. The state also wants more deliveries in government hospitals and more public trust in them.
