The latest data ets  The Registrar General of India released the latest figures in its Sample Registration System (SRS) Report 2021, released on 7th May 2025.

SDG Goal and its status in India

The United Nations adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in September 2015 to achieve a poverty, hunger, and disease-free world.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development consists of 17 SDGs to be achieved by 2030.

  • Under 5 Mortality Target - 25
  • Neonatal  Mortality Target -12
  • IMR- No target set in SDG

Achievements of States 

  •  Eight States have attained the SDG target of MMR: Kerala (20), Maharashtra (38), Telangana (45), Andhra Pradesh (46), Tamil Nadu (49), Jharkhand (51), Gujarat (53), Karnataka (63).
  • Twelve States/Union Territories have attained the SDG target of Under 5 Mortality: Kerala (8), Delhi (14), Tamil Nadu (14), Jammu & Kashmir (16), Maharashtra (16), West Bengal (20), Karnataka (21), Punjab (22), Telangana (22), Himachal Pradesh (23), Andhra Pradesh (24), and Gujarat (24).
  • Six States/Union Territories have attained the SDG target of Neonatal  Mortality: Kerala (4), Delhi (8), Tamil Nadu (9), Maharashtra (11), Jammu & Kashmir (12) and Himachal Pradesh (12).

Definition 

  • Total Fertility Rate (TFR): This refers to the average number of children a woman can have during her reproductive life cycle.
  • Neonatal Mortality Rate(NMR): Neonatal mortality rate refers to the number of deaths during the first 28 completed days of life per 1000 live births in a given year.
  • Infant Mortality Rate (IMR): Infant Mortality Rate refers to the deaths of children below the age of one year, per 1000 live births in a given year 
  • Under 5 Mortality Rate: It is defined as the probability of a child dying between birth and exactly 5 years of age, and it is expressed in per 1,000 lives.
