The largest private lender in the nation, HDFC Bank, announced that Atanu Chakraborty's term as non-executive chairman has been extended for a further three years by the board. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has been recommended to reappoint Chakraborty as the bank's independent director and part-time non-executive chairman by the board. According to HDFC Bank, the RBI has approved the case for a further three-year term, starting on 5 May 2024 and ending on 4 May 2027. 

About Atanu Chakraborty

  • Atanu Chakraborty, a Gujarati IAS officer from the 1985 batch, retired in April 2020 from his position as Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs.
  • In May 2021, he was appointed chairman of the HDFC bank.

  • Atanu Chakraborty received his Bachelor of Engineering degree from NIT Kurukshetra with a focus on electronics and communication. 
  • He graduated from the University of Hull in the United Kingdom with a master's degree in business administration and a diploma in business finance from ICFAI, Hyderabad.

    • Atanu Chakraborty has been a member of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in Gujarat cadre for 35 years.
    • He has primarily worked in the fields of infrastructure, natural gas and petroleum, and finance and economic policy. 
    • He served in a number of capacities for the Union Government, including Secretary to the Government of India in the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) of the Ministry of Finance in the Fiscal Year 2019–20.
    • He held the position of Secretary for the Department of Public Asset Management and Investment (DIPAM).
    • In addition, he served as the leader of a multidisciplinary task committee that created the National Infrastructure Pipeline.
