Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Gurugram, Haryana inaugurated Dwarka Expressway along with 112 National Highway projects worth about one lakh crore across the country.
Dwarka Expressway
The 18-km long Dwarka Expressway is India's first expressway constructed on single pillars, featuring several underpasses and service roads.
The eight-lane expressway provides direct connectivity to Delhi International Airport and Gurugram Bypass. The Haryana segment of the expressway was built at a cost of nearly ₹ 4,100 crore, and it includes a 10.2-km stretch linking the Delhi-Haryana Border with Basai Rail-over-Bridge (ROB) and an 8.7-km stretch between Basai ROB and Kherki Daula.
The Dwarka Expressway is a key part of the Bharatmala Project, which is a flagship infrastructure project of the Modi government.
The expressway is among the highway projects worth ₹ 1 lakh crore that PM Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for. Delhi and Gurugram Police issued traffic advisories due to traffic restrictions in place at border areas between Delhi and Gurugram during the Prime Minister's event.
Other major projects
Other major projects inaugurated included a 9.6-km six-lane Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II)-Package 3 between Nangloi-Najafgarh Road and Sector 24 Dwarka section in Delhi. Three sections of the Lucknow Ring Road and the Anandapuram-Pendurthi-Anakapalli phase of NH-16 in Andhra Pradesh were also inaugurated.
From the event, the Prime Minister launched projects worth ₹ 3,400 crore in Himachal Pradesh, ₹ 2,750 crore in Karnataka, and ₹ 20,500 crore in other parts of the country.
The foundation stones of different sections of the Amritsar-Bathinda corridor in Punjab and the Shamli-Ambala Highway in Haryana were also laid by the Prime Minister.
Additionally, foundation stones were laid for 14 sections of the Bengaluru-Kadappa-Vijayawada Expressway and six packages of the Belgaum-Hungund-Raichur section of NH-748A in Karnataka.
Bharatmala Project
In 2015, Shri Nitin Gadkari, the Minister of Road Transport and Highways of India, proposed Bharatmala, a project aimed at facilitating the smooth movement of both freight and passengers.
Its main objective is to bridge the gaps in the NH network and establish connectivity with more regions.
In 2017, Bharatmala was launched as an umbrella programme for the highway sector. This centrally-sponsored and funded road and highways project of the Government of India seeks to enhance the country's infrastructure.
Objective
The endeavor places great importance on the development of cross-border and international connectivity roads, as well as national highway networks that link coastal regions and ports, including economic corridors and greenfield expressways.
Its primary goal is to strengthen international trade relations with Myanmar, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal, making it a strategically significant initiative. Once finished, it will effectively alleviate traffic congestion and facilitate efficient transportation at reduced time and cost.
Key Features:
The objective of this endeavor is to enhance the caliber of road infrastructures, fostering progress throughout the nation.
This will be achieved through the construction of new roads that will facilitate national and international trade systems, linking multiple districts via national highways.
The project is anticipated to be accomplished within a span of 5 years and will be segmented into various phases to ensure smooth implementation.
