According to the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Family Welfare, 116,000 farmers have voluntarily surrendered their benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-Kisan) scheme during June 2023 to May 2024 period across the country.
The PM-KISAN scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 24th February 2019 at Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh.It is a 100% centrally sponsored scheme under which farmers get Rs 6000 per year.
Of the 116.000 farmers who have voluntarily given up the scheme maximum are from Bihar followed by Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Last year, the government enabled an option in the PM-Kisan app and the website to allow registered farmers to voluntarily deregister from the scheme.
According to the ministry, the possible reason for the farmers giving up the PM-Kisan benefits could be,
The farmers are paid Rs 2000 each in three installments by the government of India. The 16th installment was released by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 29 February 2024 directly to the bank account of 9.09 crore farmers.
Out of the 9.09 crore farmers, the maximum number of farmers were from Uttar Pradesh.
2.03 crore beneficiary farmers were in Uttar Pradesh, followed by Maharashtra (89.66 lakh farmers), Madhya Pradesh (79.93 lakh), Bihar (75.79 lakh) and Rajasthan (62.66 lakh).
To provide income support to the farmers of the country the government of India launched a 100 per cent centrally sponsored scheme Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-Kisan) yojana. It was launched by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh on 24 February 2019 .
