Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Corporation signed a contract with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on 20 November 2023 for the building of metro rail from Biju Patnaik International Airport here to Trishulia in Cuttack, after the Odisha Cabinet approved phase-I of the project. The DMRC will carry out the 6,255 crore project as a turn-key consultant for a cost of Rs 326.56 crore. DMRC roped in as a key consultant for Bhubaneswar Metro. The project will be built by Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Corporation Ltd, a wholly owned Odisha government entity. While the state government has already engaged experts for the project, it will be overseen directly by the office of the chief minister.
On a virtual platform, the MoU was signed in the presence of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. "This partnership marks the beginning of an era of change in Odisha's transportation history."
Bhubaneswar Metro is an urban Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) sanctioned for construction in Bhubaneswar, Odisha's largest city, by Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Corporation and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) as the turn-key consultant.
The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the 26 kms long Bhubaneswar Metro Phase 1 project was completed by DMRC and authorized by Odisha's state government. Through 20 elevated stations, Phase 1 will connect Trisulia Square to Bhubaneswar's Biju Patnaik Airport.
