The Union Ministry of Sports on 8 August 2023  announced a 28 member team led by Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra for the 2023 World Athletics Championships being held from 19-27 August 2023,in Budapest, Hungary.

Till date India has won only 2 medals in the World Athletic Championship. Anju Bobby George  won a bronze medal in Long Jump at the Paris event in 2003 and Neeraj Chopra won a silver medal at the last edition of the World Athletics Championship 2022 ,held in Eugene, USA .

However a number of top India athletes  like national record holder high jumper Tejaswin Shankar, 800m runner K M Chanda and national record holder 20km race walker Priyanka Goswami have decided to skip the World Championships as they wants  to focus on the upcoming 19th Asian Games (September 23 to October 8) in Hangzhou, China.

World Athletic Championship

  • The World Athletics Championship is organised by World Athletics (earlier called as ‘International Association of Athletics Federations) every two years .

  • The first World Athletic Championship was held in Helsinki, Finland in 1983.

  •  Initially it was held after every four years but after the  third World Athletic championship held in Tokyo  in 1991, it is being held after every two  years .

  • The 19th World Athletic Championship 2023 will be held in Budapest,Hungary.
