Indian Women's Hockey Team Fails to Qualify for Paris Olympics 2024

The Indian Women's hockey team failed to qualify for the Paris Olympic 2024 with a 0-1 loss to Japan in the FIH Women's Hockey Olympic Qualifiers match at Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astroturf Hockey Stadium in Ranchi.

About Women’s Hockey Olympics Qualifier 2024 

FIH Women’s Hockey Olympic Qualifier held in India and Valencia from 13 and 20 January 2024. Japan secured its place in the 2024 Paris Olympics by finishing third in the Olympic Qualifiers held in Ranchi, India.

Unfortunately, the Indian women's hockey team missed out on the opportunity to participate in the 2024 Summer Olympics after losing a must-win game against Japan in the qualifiers. 

• Only the top three hockey teams USA, Germany and Japan from the eight-nation tournament secure a spot for the Summer Olympics which will take place in France.
• Despite earning nine penalty corners, the Indian team failed to score a goal, while Japan converted one of their four corners in the sixth minute of the game, securing their place in the Olympics.
• It is unfortunate that the Indian women's hockey team has never won any medals in the Olympics.
• The Indian women's hockey team’s fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, and missing the Paris Olympics was a heartbreaking experience for the team.

About FIH

The International Hockey Federation (FIH), also known as Fédération Internationale de Hockey, was founded by Paul Léautey after hockey was left out of the 1924 Paris Games.

FIH Series

The FIH series was an international hockey tournament that began in 2018 and was organized by the International Hockey Federation. Both men and women played it and also served as a qualifier tournament for the Olympics. 

However, the series was later discontinued by FIH and replaced with the new FIH series, which includes men's and women's intercontinental cups.

Indian Women's Hockey Team Olympic Debut

The Indian Women's Hockey Team is a powerful team in Asian hockey, known for their skill and determination. 

• They have been affiliated with the International Hockey Federation since 1973 and made their international debut at the Women's Hockey World Cup in 1974, finishing fourth.
• In 1980, women's hockey made its Olympic debut, and India was one of the six nations to qualify for the sport's first-ever edition at the Moscow Olympics. 
• The Indian women's hockey team achieved an international breakthrough at the 1980 Olympic Games, finishing fourth in the tournament.
