Bengaluru to Get India’s Second Largest Cricket Stadium with 80,000 Seats

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has approved the construction of India’s second largest cricket stadium in Surya City, Bommasandra, Bengaluru, with a seating capacity of 80,000 spectators.

• Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has given the green signal for a massive sports complex to be built in Surya City, Bommasandra, Bengaluru, at a cost of ₹1,650 crore, which will also include a state-of-the-art cricket stadium with a capacity of 80,000 spectators.
• Once completed, it will become the second largest cricket stadium in India after Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Bengaluru Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar had also earlier said that the city needs another stadium because the existing Chinnaswamy Stadium is located in the middle of the city.

Other facilities in the Bengaluru stadium

• KHB has proposed to build a sports center spread over 100 acres in Surya City, with an estimated cost of ₹1,650 crore, which will be from its own funds and will not receive any assistance from the state government.
• The proposed sports center will have facilities for eight indoor and eight outdoor sports, including cricket. According to sources, the center will also have a state-of-the-art gym, training facilities, swimming pool, guest house, hostel, three-star and five-star hotels, and a convention hall where international seminars can be held.
• Bengaluru Development Authority has invited tenders to build a state-of-the-art sports stadium on the lines of Kanteerava Stadium in Dr. K. Shivaram Karanth Layout, located on the northern outskirts of the city.
• The Greater Bengaluru Development Authority, led by D.K. Suresh, has been tasked with developing an integrated township on 9,000 acres of land in Bidadi, on the western outskirts of the city. The authority also plans to create a “Sports City.”

Reason for the announcement

• The announcement was made after the tragedy outside M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on 04 June 2025, when the celebration of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL 2025 victory turned into chaos. A stampede at the gate killed 11 people and injured many others, exposing serious shortcomings in crowd management at this stadium with a capacity of 32,000 spectators.
• The Justice John Michael Cunha Commission, formed to investigate the incident, concluded that the Chinnaswamy Stadium, spread over only 17 acres, lacks the infrastructure to safely host large-scale events.
• The report recommended shifting high-profile matches to larger venues with better parking facilities, wider entrances, and advanced crowd control measures.

India’s largest cricket stadium

• Narendra Modi Stadium, formerly known as Motera Stadium, is located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
• This stadium was completed in 2020 and inaugurated in 2021. It has a seating capacity of 132,000, making it the largest cricket stadium in the world.

World’s third largest cricket stadium in Chomp, Jaipur

• On 05 February 2022, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot laid the foundation stone of the world’s third largest cricket stadium in Chomp, Jaipur, via video conferencing. BCCI President Sourav Ganguly also joined the program virtually.
• This Jaipur stadium will be the third largest in the world after Ahmedabad’s Motera and Australia’s Melbourne, and the second largest in India. It will have a seating capacity of 75,000.
• For the construction of this stadium, the BCCI will provide a grant of ₹100 crore to the Rajasthan Cricket Association.
