Yogi Adityanath Becomes Longest-Serving Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh

Yogi Adityanath has broken the record of Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant of having the longest continuous term as the Chief Minister of the State. Govind Ballabh Pant served as the Chief Minister of the state for a period of eight years and 127 days (including his tenure as Premier before independence).
As of 29 July 2025, Yogi Adityanath has been in office for 8 years and 133 days. Yogi Adityanath was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh on 19 March 2019, succeeding Akhilesh Yadav.
He led his party, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), to a thumping majority in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly election.
Behind Yogi Adityanath is Govind Ballah Pant (8 years and 127 days), followed by Mayawati (7 years and 16 days) and Mulayam Singh Yadav (6 years and 274 days).
Yogi Adityanath, whose birth name is Ajay Mohan Singh Bisht, was born in Panchur, Garhwal, in the present-day Uttarakhand.
After he became a Hindu monk, he assumed the present name Yogi Adityanath.
He was a disciple of Yogi Advaityanath, then the mahant of the Gorakhnath Math in Gorakhpur. He later became the mahant of the Gorakhnath Math after the death of his guru in 2014. He is still the mahant of the Gorakhnath Math, despite being the Chief Minister of the state.
In 1998, he was elected to the 12th Lok Sabha on a BJP ticket from Gorakhpur at the age of 26.
He subsequently won the Lok Sabha election in 1999, 2004, 2009, and 2014.
Chief Minister of UP
He was sworn in as the 21st Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh on 19 March 2017.
He was elected to the Uttar Pradesh legislative Council on 18 September 2017.
He was elected from the Gorakhpur (Urban) legislative assembly constituency in the 2022 polls, and his government came back into power.
He is the first Chief Minister of the state who has been returned to power after completing a five-year term.
Yogi Adityanath’s government is known for its Hindutva, strict law-and-order approach, and emphasis on infrastructure and industrial growth.
His government has launched various programs, such as One District One Product (ODOP), and has initiated infrastructure projects like the Purvanchal and Bundelkhand expressways.
Uttar Pradesh was formerly known as the United Province, which was constituted on 1 April 1937.
The head of the government was called the Premier, and the first Premier was Sir Nawab Muhammad Ahmed Sayeed Khan.
Pandit Govind Ballah Pant was the second Premier of the United Province and was appointed on 17 July 1937.
He was again appointed Premier on 1 April 1946 and remained in power till 27 December 1954.
The United Province was renamed as Uttar Pradesh on 24 January 1950.
Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant was the Premier of the state at that time, and his office designation was changed to Chief Minister.
Shortest Tenure as CM - Tribhuvana Narayana Singh of The Indian National Congress (Organisation). He held office for just 18 days (from 18 October 1970 to 4 November 1970).
First Woman Chief Minister - Sucheta Kriplani of the Congress Party(from 2-10-1963 to 13-03-1967).
