Government to launch U-WIN immunization registry portal

The government of India will launch a ’U-WIN’ portal for maintaining an electronic registry of routine immunisations. The portal under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has been designed on the lines of COVID-19 vaccine management system Co-WIN. 

The U-WIN programme has been designed to digitise the Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP) and it is presently being run in a pilot mode in two districts of each state and Union Territory.

What will the U-WIN Portal do?

• The platform will be used to register and vaccinate every pregnant woman, record her delivery outcome, register every newborn delivery, administer birth doses and all vaccination events.
• The U-WIN is going to be the single source of information for immunisation services for the targeted population under the Universal Immunisation Programme. 
• The portal will also maintain live updating of vaccination status, delivery outcome, and planning of routine immunisation sessions.

Problem with the existing system 

• At present vaccination records under UIP are being maintained manually which has led to duplication and exclusion of beneficiaries.  
• Inadequate monitoring of targeted pregnant mothers and children has in certain instances led to multiple vaccination and doses. 
• The system is also plagued by the absence of a mechanism of individual tracking of vaccinated mother and child.
• Another major issue is that immunisation at private health facilities is not recorded.
• There is also lack of awareness among beneficiaries about sessions, location and date, especially in urban areas and iniquity in immunisation coverage in states/UTs.

Benefit of U-WIN portal

• For pregnant women and children an vaccine acknowledgement and immunisation card linked to ABHA ID (Ayushman Bharat Heath Account) will be generated.
• Linking with ABHA will help all the states and districts to access a common database to track and vaccinate beneficiaries. It will lead to better tracking of the beneficiaries. 
• Through the platform citizens can check nearby ongoing routine immunisation sessions, and book appointments
• This is expected to boost vaccination coverage in India .

Universal Immunisation Scheme 

Universal Immunisation Scheme is part of the Reproductive and Child Care (RCH) program under National Health Mission (NHM) Union Ministry Of Health and Family Welfare. 

It was launched in 1985 to immunise pregnant women and newly born childs so as to reduce mortality and morbidity. At present 8 vaccines are provided under UIP.

Vaccines provided under Universal Immunisation Scheme are as follows:

1. BCG (Bacillus Calmette Guerin) 
2. DPT (Diphtheria, Pertussis and Tetanus Toxoid) 
3. OPV (Oral Polio Vaccine) 
4. Measles 
5.  Hepatitis B 
6. TT (Tetanus Toxoid) 
7. JE vaccination (in selected high disease burden districts) 
8. Hib containing Pentavalent vaccine (DPT+HepB+Hib) (In selected States)
