Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli (K P Sharma Oli) was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Nepal for the fourth time by President Ram Chandra Paudel on 15 July 2024 in Kathmandu. KP Sharma Oli will lead a coalition government after the fall of the previous coalition government led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’.
According to the provisions of the Nepal constitution, the new government has to seek a vote of confidence from the lower house of the Nepalese Parliament within 30 days of being sworn in.
This is the fourth time that K P Sharma Oli has become the Prime Minister of Nepal.
He first became the prime minister in October 2015 and remained in power til August 2016. His second term as the prime minister was from February 2018 to May 2021, and his third was from May 2021 to July 2021.
K P Sharma Oli will lead a coalition government in Nepal. K P Sharma Oli staked to form a government after Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda's previous government lost a vote of confidence in the lower house of Nepal’s Parliament House of Representatives on 12 July 2024.
Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s Communist Party of Nepal(Maoist Center) formed a coalition government with KP Sharma Oli-led Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist) after the parliamentary election held in 2022.
However, the government fell after 18 months when KP Sharma Oli-led Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist) withdrew support from the government.
After Prachand’s resignation as Prime Minister on 12 July, KP Sharma Oli staked a claim to form the government in alliance with Sher Bahadur Deuba’s Nepali Congress.
Nepali Congress has 88 members in the 275-member House of Representatives, while the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist) has 78 members.
According to a formula for government formation, KP Sharma Oli will later step down as Prime Minister and five-time Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Dueba will become Prime Minister for the rest of the term.
The next parliamentary election in Nepal is scheduled to be held in 2027.
