K Kishore become UN Special Representative for Disaster Risk Reduction

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appointed a Special Representative for Disaster Risk Reduction. Guterres has selected Kamal Kishore, a top official of India's National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), for this.

55 year old Kamal Kishore gets new responsibility in UNDRR:

Official information in this regard was given by the Secretary General's spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric on 27 March 2024. According to Stéphane Dujarric, 55-year-old Kamal Kishore has been appointed Assistant Secretary-General in the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR). Also, Kamal Kishore has been appointed as the special representative of the General Secretary.

Kamal Kishore would replace Mami Mizutori:

Kamal Kishore would replace Mami Mizutori of Japan. At present, Kamal Kishore holds the post of Secretary in the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

Kamal Kishore's work in the field of disaster risk:

During India's G-20 presidency, Kishore led the G-20 working group on disaster risk reduction.
Kamal Kishore also contributed to the development of the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Climate Action Summit in 2019.

Kishore has worked at various levels in the field of disaster risk:

Kamal Kishore has experience working with the government, United Nations, and civil society organizations.
Kishore has nearly three decades of experience in disaster risk reduction, climate action, and sustainable development at various levels.

Kamal Kishore has worked with UNDP for 13 years:

Before joining NDMA, Kishore worked for about 13 years with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) at various locations.
Kishore has conducted global advocacy to reduce disaster concerns within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals. Additionally, Kishore has led a global team of disaster risk reduction advisors to support UNDP-programme countries.
Kishore served as Programme Advisor and led the development of disaster and climate risk management-related elements of the UNDP Strategic Plan (2014–17).
