Gujarat has become the 24th State/Union Territory to achieve 100% electrification of rail tracks. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Gujarat's achievements during the inauguration of the Dahod Electric Locomotive Factory in Dahod, Gujarat. 

The Indian Railway, in collaboration with Siemens, has set up the Dahod Electric Locomotive Factory to produce India’s first 9000 HP Locomotive engines for freight trains(goods trains).

Electrification Project of the Indian Railway 

The first electric train to run in India was from Mumbai to Thane in 1925.

  • In the first five-year plan (1951-1956), the central government set a target to electrify the country's 141 km of rail routes.
  • To achieve railway electrification, the Indian Railway has set up the Central Organisation for Railway Electrification, which is headquartered in Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad) in Uttar Pradesh.
  • According to the Indian Railways, the current target is to electrify its broad gauge network by the end of the 2025-26 fiscal year. 

Reason for emphasis on electrification of rail routes 

  • It is expected to reduce the railway's fossil fuel bill by Rs 15,000 crore annually.
  • It will help the Indian Railways achieve a net-zero carbon status by 2030.
  • It will help India achieve the zero-carbon emission target by 2070.

Status of rail route electrification in India 

Initially, the pace of electrification was slow in India.

According to the Indian Railways, 21,801 km of rail routes were electrified from 1948 to 31 March 2014.

  • Since 2014-15 until February 2025, 45,922 km of additional broad gauge route have been electrified.
  • Since  2020-21, the Indian Railways has electrified more than 6000 km every year.
  • In 2024-25, it electrified 2,701km as compared to the target of 2,885km.
  • The pace of electrification of the rail route is around 16 km per day, the fastest in the world.
  • At the end of February 2025, 98.83% of the route was electrified.
  • Only Switzerland is ahead of India, which has electrified 99 % of its route.
  • India is far ahead of the United States, which has 1% of its routes electrified, the United Kingdom, 38%, and the European Union, 56%.

Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Odisha, Puducherry, Punjab, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Tripura and West Bengal.

  • Rajasthan - 98% route electrified
  • Karnataka- 96%
  • Tamil Nadu -96%
  • Goa - 88%
  • Assam 79%
