Outcome of 2024 Brazil visit of PM Modi & 19th G 20 Summit Meeting

Prime Minister Narendra Modi successfully concluded his State visit to Brazil on 20 November 2024 and reached Georgetown, Guyana. He is on a three-nation bilateral state visit to Nigeria, Brazil, and Guyana from 16-21 November 2024. He arrived in Brazil on 18 November after his successful visit to Nigeria.

This was Prime Minister Modi's third visit to Brazil. He first went in 2014 and then again in 2019 to attend the BRICS Summit hosted by Brazil.

Prime Minister Modi was in Brazil to attend the 19th Group of 20 (G20) Heads of State and Government Summit Meeting 2024. 

Prime Minister Modi met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Portugal Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, Prime Minister of Norway Jonas Gahr Store, French President Emmanuel Macron, and the United Kingdom’s Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer on the sidelines of the G20 Summit meeting.

2nd India Australia Summit Meeting 

• The 2nd India-Australia Summit was held on 19 November 2024 in Rio de Janeiro on the sidelines of the  G20 Summit meeting. 
• Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese attended the summit.
• The first India-Australia Summit meeting was held in March 2023 in New Delhi.
• The third India-Australia Summit meeting will be held in Australia in 2025.

G 20 Heads of State and Government Summit 2024

• The 19th G20 Heads of State and Government Summit 2024 was attended by the leaders of the 19 member countries, plus the European Union and the African Union. The African Union was made a permanent member of the G20 at the New Delhi meeting held in 2023.
• It was hosted by the Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
• The theme of the 19th Summit Meeting was “Building a just world and a sustainable planet”.
• India, the previous host, was part of the Troika, along with Brazil, and the next host, South Africa, played a key role in contributing to the G20 Summit discussions.
• At the end of the Summit meeting, the leaders issued a consensus declaration titled the” Rio de Janeiro Declaration.”
• The Declaration emphasised the importance of coordinated actions to combat climate change, promote just energy transitions, and preserve the environment. 
• It also called for comprehensive reform in global governance, including strengthening the United Nations, modernising the international financial system, fostering an inclusive multilateral trading system, and promoting the ethical development of artificial intelligence.
• South Africa will host the 20th G20 Heads of State and Government Summit 2025.

About the G20 

The G20 is an intergovernmental group that includes the world’s industrialised G7 countries (Japan, Germany, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States ) and leading developing countries.

The G20 was created as an intergovernmental body to discuss global economic issues. However, its scope was later extended, and it now discusses global issues like trade, sustainable development, health, energy, agriculture, the environment, climate change, and the fight against corruption.

The G20 members represent around two-thirds of the world's population,85% of the world's GDP and more than 75% of world trade.

The G20 comprises 19 countries and two regional organisations, the European Union and the African Union.

The member 19 countries are - India, Brazil, Argentina, Australia, Canada, Italy, France, South Africa, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, China, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Türkiye, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

Headquarters: It has no fixed secretariat or headquarters.
