The winners of the Earthshot Prize 2025 were announced in Rio, Brazil

The winners of the Earthshot Prize 2025 were announced in Rio, Brazil, and each will receive £1 million to advance their projects to repair climate change.

The Prince of Wales, who established the global environmental prize in 2020, said that the winners are an "inspiration" and "proof that progress is possible."

The prize was inspired by former U.S. President John F. Kennedy's Moonshot project, which challenged scientists to safely land astronauts on the moon and bring them back.

There are five Earthshots or goals for which this prize is awarded: protect and restore nature; clean our air; revive our oceans; build a waste-free world; and fix our climate.

This year, nearly 2,500 nominations were received from 72 countries. From these, 15 finalists were selected, out of which five winners were chosen.

Earthshot Prize

The Earthshot Prize was established in 2020 by Prince William, the Royal Foundation, and David Attenborough, inspired by John F. Kennedy’s 1962 Moonshot Challenge.

The prize is awarded annually from 2021 to 2030 to five winners who receive a £1 million grant to discover and develop innovative solutions to tackle environmental challenges.

Its aim is to identify and support the most innovative solutions to the planet’s greatest environmental challenges by 2030.

In 2021, an Indian entrepreneur won the Earthshot Prize, and a 14-year-old girl from Tamil Nadu was also nominated for her solar-powered ironing cart, while an Indian firm was a finalist in 2023.
