Lt Gen Pushpendra Singh Appointed 48th Vice Chief of Indian Army Staff

Lieutenant General Pushpendra Singh of the Parachute Regiment (Special Forces) assumed the office of the 48th Vice Chief of the Army Staff on 31 July 2025. He succeeded Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani, who retired as the 47th Vice Chief of the Army Staff on 31st July 2025.

About Lt Gen Pushpendra Singh and his Accomplishments 

Lieutenant General Pushpendra Singh was commissioned into the 4th Battalion of the Indian Army’s elite Parachute Regiment (Special Forces) in December 1987. During his 38 years of illustrious service in the Indian Army, Lieutenant General Pushpendra Singh has served in key military operations and held numerous commands. 

He was deployed in Kashmir and commanded a Special Forces Unit in the Kashmir Valley and on the Line of Control with Pakistan.

During Operation Snow Leopard, he commanded an Infantry Brigade and a Mountain Division along the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh.

He was the General Officer in Command (GOC) of a Corps headquartered in Himachal Pradesh, which oversaw the sensitive Jammu, Samba, and Pathankot sectors.

Military Operations of the Indian Army 

As a Special Force officer, he participated in Operation Pawan ,Operation Meghdoot, Operation Ordhid, Operation Snow Leopard and also in Operation Rakshak.

Operation Pawan 

• It was India’s first tri-service overseas military operation.
• It was launched by the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) in 1987 in Sri Lanka to disarm the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and to enforce the India-Sri Lanka Peace Accord. 

Operation Meghdoot

• It was launched by the Indian Army in April 1984 to take control of the Siachen glacier before the Pakistani Army.
• The Indian Army's Operation Meghdoot is still ongoing, and it is considered the world’s longest continuing military operation. 

Operation Orchid

• It is a counter-insurgency operation of the Indian Army that was launched in Nagaland in 1956 to deal with the insurgents.
• The counter-insurgency operation is still active.

Operation Rakshak 

• It is a counter-insurgency and counter terrorism operation launched by the Indian Army in Jammu and Kashmir in 1990. 
• It is still active in Jammu and Kashmir.

Operation Snow Leopard

• It was launched by the Indian Army in the Ladakh area in 2020, following the June 2020 Galwan clash between the Indian and Chinese Armies.
• Operation Snow Leopard was launched to capture key strategic heights along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh, giving India not just a tactical but also a strategic advantage on the ground and in talks between the two sides.
