The Swedish Academy has chosen Norwegian author Jon Olav Fosse for the 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature. According to the Swedish Academy, Jon Olav Fosse was chosen for the prize “for his innovative plays and prose which give voice to the unsayable.” The Nobel Prize in Literature is given for an author's lifetime literary work.
He will get a prize money of 11 million Swedish kroner (US$1 million).
The prize will be conferred to him on December 10, 2023, in Stockholm, Sweden.
Jon Olav Fosse was born on September 29 1959, in Haugesund, Norway.
He has written around 40 plays as well as novels, short stories, poetry, children's books and essays.
His first novel was Raud Svart, published in 1983.
His other works include the novels "Stengd Gitar” and "Skuggar" (2007) and the short novel ‘Morgon og kveld.’
His work, “A New Name: Septology VI-VII”, was shortlisted for the International Booker Prize in 2022.
Jon Olav Fosse is the fourth Norwegian to get the Literature Prize.

The Nobel Prize was founded in the memory of Alfred Nobel, who, in his will, asked to set up a foundation to give prizes to those persons or institutions that, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to "humankind". The Nobel Foundation was set up in 1900, and the first prize was given in 1901.
Rabindranath Tagore is the only Indian to get the Nobel Prize in Literature (1913). He was the first Asian to get a Nobel prize.
