Switzerland announced on 11 April 2024 that it has proposed to host a conference at the level of the heads of state of Russia and Ukraine.

This is happening on the demand of the Ukrainian President:

  • In this context, it is believed that this is happening about three months after the demand was made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
  • This is happening almost three months after the demand was made by Ukrainian President Zelensky. The aim of this conference is to provide a high level platform for dialogue. This will lead to a comprehensive, just and lasting peace for Ukraine on the basis of international law and the UN Charter.
  • 'During President Zelensky's visit to Bern on January 15, 2024, Switzerland and Ukraine discussed next steps towards peace. Switzerland agreed to host a high-level conference at Ukraine's request. In June 2024, Switzerland will likely have the opportunity to discuss negotiations on peace in Ukraine.

Objectives of Switzerland Summit:

  • “The objective of the summit is to create common understanding and a concrete roadmap for the peace process,” the statement said. By organizing this conference, Switzerland is also making an important contribution to greater security and stability in Europe and the world.

The conference will be held at the Burgenstock Hotel on Lake Lucerne:

  • The proposed date of this conference is 15-16 June 2024 at the Bürgenstock Hotel above Lake Lucerne in central Switzerland.
  • About 120 countries will be invited to this conference to be held at the level of heads of state.

G-7 summit in Italy from June 13-15:

  • The conference to be held in Switzerland is also important because the summit of G-7 leaders is to be held in Italy from 13-15 June 2024. Because of this, maximum attendance is expected.

India also invited to Switzerland conference talks:

  • India has also been invited to this peace conference to be held in Switzerland. Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis met External Affairs Minister Jaishankar during his visit to India on 5 February 2024.
  • During this, Cassis had expressed the hope of India joining these talks. In this sequence, in March 2024, Zelensky spoke on phone with PM Modi.
  • Later, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba visited India to extend an invitation to India to participate in the conference.

Opinion of both sides regarding the talks:

  • Zelensky expressed hope that there would be 80 to 100 countries that would at least be able to try to force Russia into a fair peace. He also admitted that he does not yet have any special list related to these countries. He said, 'We will agree on how peace will be achieved in the coming days.'
  • Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has also given a warning in this regard in the first week of April 2024. Lavrov said that discussions related to ending the war in Ukraine can be successful only when Russia's interests are taken into account. Putin has been saying that there will be no peace until Russia's goals are not achieved.
  • However, due to the American election campaign, there are question marks on the participation of Biden, Jinping and Putin.
  • The results of elections in India will come on 4 June 2024. All these will affect them.
