Indian men’s hockey team captain Harmapreet Singh and former Indian goalkeeper PR Sreejesh won the FIH Hockey Star Awards 2024. The world governing body of Hockey, FIH, announced the winner of its annual Hockey Star award for the year 2024 in a glittering ceremony held in the Omani capital city of Muscat on 8 November 2024.
Male and Female hockey players were selected for the FIH Hockey Star Award 2024 for their performance in 2024. The winners were selected through votes cast by a panel of experts, national associations represented by their team captains and coaches, fans, and media.
Harmanpreet Singh won his third FIH Player of the Year award in 2024, having won it in 2021 and 2022. Incidentally, another Indian, Hardik Singh, won the 2023 Award.
Harmanpreet Singh received 63.84% of the votes, far ahead of second-place Joop de Mol of the Netherlands, who received 16.10%.
Indian captain Harmpreet Singh, who is regarded as one of the top drag flickers in the world, captained India to a bronze medal in the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. He was also the top scorer of the tournament with 10 goals.
Harmnapreet also led the Indian hockey team to its fifth Asian Men’s Champions Trophy title in China in September 2024, where he was also named the player of the tournament.
Long-time Indian men’s hockey team goalkeeper PR Sreejesh won his third FIH Goalkeeper of the Year award. PR Sreejesh, who, due to his formidable goalkeeping, was also called as the ‘the Great Wall of India’, had won the award in 2021 and 2022 also.
Sreejesh, who retired after the 2024 Paris Olympics, got 62.22 per cent of the votes.
