Geographical Indication (GI) Tag to Goan Cashew State news 4 min read

Goan cashew, with its long and cherished heritage, has been awarded a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, which is a significant development.

  • The Geographical Indications Registry in Chennai granted this recognition to establish Goan cashew as a unique product originating from a specific geographical region.
  • The GI tag serves as a trademark, distinguishing it in the international market and preserving tradition and authenticity.
  • The Goa Cashew Manufacturers’ Association (GCMA) filed the application for the GI tag for the Goan cashew, derived from the Portuguese name ‘caju’ or ‘kaju’ in Konkani, with the Department of Science, Technology and Waste Management, Government of Goa. This prestigious tag will have a substantial impact on the Goan cashew industry.

History of Goa Cashew

  • Cashew was brought to Goa by the Portuguese in the 16th century. At first, it was mainly used for afforestation and soil conservation.
  • It was only a century later, during the freedom movement, that the edible value of cashew nuts was discovered by Goan prisoners exiled to Portuguese territory in Africa (Mozambique). This prompted the realization of the economic value of cashew nuts.
  • The first cashew factory in Goa began operations in 1926, and the first shipment of cashew kernels was exported in 1930.
  • Cashew production gradually grew from a cottage industry to a large-scale one, allowing for foreign trade primarily with the USA.
  • By 1961, the cashew processing industry accounted for approximately 60% of industrial production in Goa, with a significant proportion exported to various countries.
