Indian chess player Dommaraju Gukesh won the Chennai Grand Masters 2023 tournament. Gukesh won the title in this tournament by holding compatriot Pantala Harikrishna to a draw on 21 December 2023. Whereas, Arjun Erigaisi secured the second position in this tournament. Both Arjun and Gukesh finished the tournament with 4.5 points out of 7.
- Gukesh won the tournament on tie-break. Pantala Harikrishna stood third with 4 points. Thus achieving all the top positions in the Chennai Grand Masters tournament.

- With this win, Gukesh has taken the lead in the FIDE circuit. If he maintains the lead till January 1, 2024, he will be able to qualify for the Candidates Tournament 2024.
- Before this, R. Praggnanandhaa had qualified for the Candidates Tournament 2024 by finishing second in the FIDE World Cup 2023 held in Baku, Azerbaijan this year.
- Vidit Gujarati also secured the Candidates Tournament 2024 place this year by winning the FIDE Grand Swiss 2023 held in the Isle of Man (UK) on 5 November 2023.
Candidates Tournament 2024:
- This is an eight-player chess tournament. It is held mainly to qualify for the next World Chess Championship.
- The next World Chess Championship is scheduled to be held in Toronto, Canada, from 2 to 25 April 2024.
