The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan was on a three-day visit to India from 11-13 December 2024. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan was in India to attend the 15th India-UAE Joint Commission Meeting and the Fourth UAE-India Strategic Dialogue.
The last India-UAE Joint Commission Meeting and the UAE-India Strategic Dialogue was held in Abu Dhabi, UAE in 2022.
The visit of the UAE minister was part of the efforts by both countries to strengthen their Comprehensive Strategic Partnerships.
At the end of the meeting with Dr Jaishankar, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed to enhance cooperation in Polar and Ocean research.
Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 12 December 2024 in New Delhi. Both the leaders discussed discuss the implementation of the India-Middle East-Europe Corridor.
The India-Middle East-Europe Corridor was proposed during the G-20 Summit meeting in New Delhi 2023. It seeks to link the European Union countries with India through the Gulf countries of the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.
The Corridor has two projects: an eastern maritime link between India and the Gulf Countries and a northern section connecting the Arabian Peninsula to Europe.
The UAE Minister, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, met Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar in New Delhi. Both the leaders discussed bilateral and global issues.
Both leaders co-chaired the 4th India-UAE Strategic Dialogue in New Delhi on 12 December 2024.
Both leaders agreed to expand their strategic partnership in several areas, including defence, emerging technologies, nuclear energy, polar research, critical minerals, and renewable energy.
The 15th India-UAE Joint Commission Meeting, co-chaired by both leaders, was held in New Delhi on 13th December 2024.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between India and MoU on the sidelines of the Joint Commission Meeting.
The Emirates Polar Mission Steering Committee, UAE, and the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), Goa, signed the MoU. It will increase cooperation between the two countries in polar and ocean research, academic collaborations, capacity building, and support for each other’s presence at the poles.
Both countries have signed the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) to boost trade and investment between the two countries. The India-UAE CEPA came into effect on 1 May 2022.
In 2022-23, UAE was India's fourth largest foreign direct investment(FDI) source.
The UAE is India's third-largest trading partner, with a bilateral trade worth $83.65 billion in 2023-24.
IIT Delhi has set up its first foreing campus in Abu Dhabi.
Around 35 lakh Indian expatriates live in the UAE.
