India’s first PPP Green waste processing plant to be set up in Indore

India’s cleanest city Indore in Madhya Pradesh has launched India’s first public-private partnership (PPP) model-based green waste processing plant under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban.The project will process green waste in the municipal area of the city into valuable resources and help the city to achieve garbage-free status.

The second phase of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban launched on 1st October 2021 aims to achieve “Garbage Free” status for all cities of the country by 2026.

The latest initiative of the Indore Municipal Corporation is to achieve the target of the second phase of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban.

Who is setting up the green waste processing plant in PPP mode?

The green waste processing plant is being set up by the Indore Municipal Corporation in partnership with Astronomical Industries Private Limited.

The Municipal Corporation will allocate the land for the facility and transport the green waste to the facility.

The private sector will be responsible for constructing and managing the waste processing facility.

Capacity of the waste processing plant

The waste processing plant will be built on 55,000 square feet of land in Bicholi Hapsi. 

The plant will recycle the wood, branches, leaves, and flowers collected in the Indore Municipal areas.

Normally Indore produces around 30 tonnes of wood, branches, leaves, and flower waste per day which can go up to 60 to 70 tons in the autumn season.

Boost to the Circular economy 

The green waste plant will give a boost to the circular economy and provide an alternative option to substitute the use of non-biodegradable materials.

• The green waste collected will be dried up for three to four months in order to reduce their moisture content by 90%.
• The de-moisturized waste will be converted into wood pellets to be used as fuel in place of coals.
• The de-moisturized waste will be converted into fine sawdust particles.
• The sawdust will be used as a durable packaging material as a substitute for plastics;
• Sawdust will be used by the furniture makers as a composite material for manufacturing chairs and tables;
• Sawdust can be used by farmers as a fertilizer;
• Sawdust can be used for manufacturing biodegradable disposable plates in place of non-biodegradable plastic and Styrofoam.

Benefit of the Waste Processing Plant for Indore 

• The Indore Municipal Corporation will earn Rs 3,000 per tonne in royalty for supplying wood and branches to the waste processing plant.
• It will help the Indore Municipal Corporation in meeting the garbage-free status under the second phase of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban.
• The initiative will improve the air quality of Indore.
• It will also reduce pollution, enhance hygiene, and curb the unnecessary burning of waste in the city.
