On March 17, 2024, senior Indian Information Service officer Sheyphali B Sharan was appointed as the spokesperson of the Central Government. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting gave this information to the media.

  • Sheypheli B Sharan is a 1990 batch Indian Information Service officer. Now Sheyphell B Sharan will hold the charge of Principal Director General (PDG) of Press Information Bureau (PIB).

Sheyphali Sharan will replace Manish Desai:

  • The tenure of the current Principal Director General of Press Information Bureau, Manish Desai, is ending on March 31, 2024. After this Sheyphali B Sharan will take over the charge.
  • After 2014, Sheyphali B Sharan will be the first woman officer to become PDG of PIB.

Sharan is the 5th woman officer to become the head of PIB:

  • Sharan will be the 5th woman officer to head PIB.
  • Before Sheyphali Sharan, the prominent women who served as Director General of PIB are as follows:
    • Neelam Kapoor
    • Deepak Sandhu
    • Shakuntala Mahawal
    • N J Krishna.

Sheyphali Sharan has been the spokesperson of the Election Commission:

  • Sheyphali Sharann worked as the spokesperson of the Election Commission during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
  • Apart from this, Sheyphali Sharan has also worked as the spokesperson of the Finance Ministry.
  • Sharan has also worked as the Chief Communication Officer of the Railway Ministry.

About Press Information Bureau (PIB):

  • The Press Information Bureau is the Government of India's nodal agency for sharing information with print and electronic media about government policies, programmes, initiatives and achievements.
  • In this, information is distributed to about 8,400 newspapers and media organizations in different parts of the country. In this, information is released in English, Hindi and Urdu languages. Later it was translated into other Indian languages.
  • The history of the Press Information Bureau can be traced back to the First World War years. When a Central Publicity Board was established under the Home Member of the British Government. Established in June 1919 to prepare an annual report on India and present it to the British Parliament.
  • It was established as a cell in the Home Department under the leadership of Dr LF Rushbrooke Williams.
  • In the late 1920s, the name of this cell was changed to ‘Central Bureau of Information’. Dr. L.F. Rushbrook Williams became its director. In 1938, the designation of Bureau Chief was changed from Director to Principal Information Officer.
  • In the year 1941, J Natarajan became the first Indian to be appointed Principal Information Officer. In 1946, the name of this organization was changed to the Press Information Bureau.
