NABARD announced on 10th July 2026, Friday, that it has facilitated Geographical Indication (GI) registration for 28 new products, including traditional handicrafts, handloom textiles, and bamboo crafts, taking its total tally to 176 GI-registered products nationwide. The announcement was made via an official NABARD statement, with Chairman Shaji Krishnan V. highlighting GI registration as a tool for protecting traditional knowledge and boosting rural entrepreneurship.
The newly registered items span handicrafts, handloom textiles, bamboo crafts, metalwork, pottery, paintings, and musical instruments, reflecting India's diverse craft traditions now backed by legal protection and export potential.
NABARD's GI initiatives have connected over 13,000 artisans to higher-value markets and generated more than 50,000 direct jobs, supported by 14 Rural Enterprise Producer Organisations across six states, along with GI Facilitation Centers in Ahmedabad, Bihar, and Tamil Nadu, and a GI Store at Aihole, Karnataka.
Recently, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh’s traditional products received GI tags.

A Geographical Indication (GI) is a sign placed on goods that come from a defined geographical origin, where the product's quality, reputation, or other traits are essentially tied to that place. In India, this protection is granted under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999, and the entire registration process is handled by the Geographical Indications Registry, which functions under the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks.
