Hemis Festival 2026: Date, Meaning, Significance, and Celebrations

The Hemis Festival 2026 begins on 24th June 2026 at the Hemis Monastery in the Leh district of the Union Territory of Ladakh. It is a 2-day festival and one of the biggest festivals of Ladakh. On the inauguration day, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, V.K. Saxena, graced the occasion.

Why is the Hemis Festival celebrated?

The Hemis Festival is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of “Guru Padmasambhava,” who is widely known as Guru Rinpoche or the Second Buddha. It is believed that he introduced Tantric Buddhism (Vajrayana) in the 8th century. This festival is a celebration of his victory over negativity and the establishment of the Buddhist faith. The Hemis festival date follows the Tibetan lunar calendar and falls on the 10th day of the 5th lunar month every year. This year, the date corresponds to 24-25th June 2026. 

What is the significance of the Hemis Festival?

1. The festival is a tribute to Guru Padmasambhava's contribution to spiritual awakening. 
2. The rituals, dances, costumes, music, and prayers are performed during the Hemis Festival, showcasing cultural importance.
3. Monks, lamas, local villagers, and visitors from different parts of the world all gather in the same space for community bonding.

What Happens During the Hemis Festival?

In the two days of the festival, rituals and ceremonies are performed. Here is what takes place:

1. Cham Dance - Performed by monks wearing colorful costumes and large masks that represent various deities, spirits, and demonic forces. 
2. Thangka Display - On the second day, during the rare 12-year cycle, a giant Thangka painting of Guru Rinpoche is brought out and displayed on the monastery walls.
3. Traditional Tibetan Music - Traditional Tibetan music instruments are used. These include the Dungchen (long copper trumpets), the Gyaling (a Tibetan oboe-like wind instrument), and the Nga and Damaru (various types of ritual drums).
4.  Prayers and Offerings - Monks sit in the monastery halls and chant ancient scriptures. Ritual offerings are made, including butter lamps, flowers, rice, and tormas.
