BJP Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Dinesh Sharma has been appointed as the new Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He took oath on 15th September 2026 at Lok Niwas in Sri Vijaya Puram (formerly Port Blair), with Calcutta High Court Chief Justice Ravindra Vithalrao Ghuge administering the oath of office and secrecy. Chief Secretary Gyanesh Bharti read out the Warrant of Appointment during the ceremony, which was attended by senior bureaucrats, political representatives, and members of the business community.
Dr. Sharma becomes the 14th Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory, succeeding Admiral D.K. Joshi (retd.), who had held the post since 8th October 2017. The Rashtrapati Bhavan had formally announced his appointment on 5th September 2026, with the order stating it would take effect from the date he assumes charge. Dr. Sharma reached the islands from New Delhi on 13th September, accompanied by his wife, Jai Lakshmi Sharma.
Dr. Dinesh Sharma, 62, brings a long political and academic career to this new role. Before his current appointment, he served as Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and also held the position of Mayor of Lucknow. Academically, he worked as a professor of commerce at the University of Lucknow before stepping into full-time politics.
During his time in the Uttar Pradesh government, Dr. Sharma handled key portfolios such as higher and secondary education, science and technology, and electronics and information technology. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh in 2023, and his term was originally set to run until 25th November this year. His appointment as Lt Governor now marks a significant new chapter in his career, moving from state-level politics to a constitutional position overseeing a Union Territory.
