Nisha Mehta, an alumna of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, has become the Minister of Health and Population of Nepal. The National Independent Party secured a majority in the historic election held after protests.
Mehta, who studied at the College of Nursing of AIIMS New Delhi, is among the few health professionals who have stepped into a top political role in Nepal’s public health system. She took oath as Nepal’s Health Minister on March 27, 2026.
The statement further said that during her time at AIIMS, she consistently demonstrated excellent leadership qualities, active participation in academics and other activities, and a deep sense of responsibility—qualities that clearly guided her toward higher leadership and public service.
She pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing at the institute from 2006 to 2010.
The National Independent Party (RSP) achieved a sweeping victory in the March 5, 2026 elections, winning 182 out of 275 seats in the House of Representatives, paving the way for a majority government.
Balendra Shah, popularly known as Balen Shah, took oath as the 47th Prime Minister of Nepal. At the age of 35, he is the youngest Prime Minister of the country.
This is the first democratically elected government since the coalition led by former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli was removed from power in September last year; this happened after Gen Z-led protests over corruption, nepotism, and social media restrictions turned violent.
