Manipur’s TG English School wins 63rd Subroto Cup U-17 Boys title

Manipur’s TG English School won the under -17 boys title of the 63rd Subroto Cup International Football Tournament, defeating Meghalaya’s Myngken Christian Higher Secondary School in the final on 11 September 2024. 

The  63rd Subroto Cup International Football Tournament for under-17 boys was held in New Delhi from 2 -11 September at New Delhi.

Subroto Cup is a premier inter-school football tournament in the country in which foreign teams also participate.

In the 2024 event, school teams from Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka participated in the U-17 Boys title.

U-17 Boys' title for the Manipur’s TG English School 

Manipur's TG English School defeated Meghalaya’s Myngken Christian Higher Secondary School 4-3 in the penalty shoot-out to lift the U-17 Boys title of the 63rd Subroto Cup International Football Tournament.

Both teams were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation time. Namdigong opened the score for the Manipur team with a goal in the 32nd minute of the match, which was equalised by Megalaya’s team through a 64th-minute goal by Banpliebok Khongjoh.

The Air Chief Marshal Vivek Ram Chaudhari, along with the 2022 Asian Games double silver medallist field and track athlete Harmilan Bains, presented the trophy to the winners.

Manipur’s TG English School received the trophy and a cheque of Rs 5 lakhs, while the runners-up team, Meghalaya’s Myngken Christian Higher Secondary School, received a cheque of Rs 3 lakhs.

Organiser of the Subroto Cup International Football Tournament

The  Subroto Cup International Football Tournament is an interschool football tournament. School teams from India and foreign participate in the Subroto Cup. 

• The tournament is organised in memory of the late Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee. After his untimely death in 1958, a Subroto Mukerjee Sports Education Society was formed in 1960 under the Indian Air Force to organise a school-level football tournament in the country. 
• The first Subroto Cup was held in 1960 in New Delhi.
• Initially, the Durand Cup was orgainsed by the Durand Football Tournament Committee, which organises India’s oldest club-level football tournament -Durand Cup.
• Later, in 1994, the Air Force Sports Control Board took over the responsibility of the Subroto Cup.
• At the start of the Subroto Cup, it was only for the U-17 boys. In 1998, it was extended to the U-14 Boys category, and in 2012, a Girls' U-17 category was also started.
