India will host the UCI Road World Championships for the first time in 2032, and Pune will be the venue. The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) announced this at its 195th Congress in Montreal on Thursday.
The Congress was held alongside the 2026 World Championships, and 117 national federations from five continents attended. Pune will become the first Indian city to stage cycling's biggest road race event. UCI president David Lappartient said the event can help grow both competitive cycling and everyday cycling in India.
India has never hosted this event before, so 2032 will be its debut. The next Road World Championships after Pune, in 2034, will be held in the Dutch provinces of Groningen and Drenthe, along with the Para-cycling Road World Championships.
India has almost one-fifth of the world's population, which gives the UCI access to one of the biggest possible cycling audiences. The UCI hopes the event will boost cycling at both the elite and grassroots levels. It will also bring the famous rainbow jersey races to Indian roads for the first time.
Before India's turn, France will host the 2027 UCI Cycling World Championships in Haute-Savoie Mont-Blanc from August 25 to September 5. It will bring together 20 different World Championships, making it the largest cycling event organised so far. Bernard Hinault, a five-time Tour de France winner, will be its ambassador.
At the Congress, the UCI awarded 19 World Championships across 11 countries for the years 2027 to 2034. The hosts cover Europe, North America, Latin America, and Asia. The disciplines include road, track, mountain bike, BMX, gravel, and cyclocross. Some examples:
