China Harvests First Rice Crop Grown In Space

China's Shenzhou-23 crew successfully harvested the first batch of rice samples grown from seeds carried to the China Space Station in May 2026, marking a step toward in-situ food production that could support future deep-space exploration.

Shenzhou-23 Crew: First Space Rice Harvest Complete

The Shenzhou-23 spacecraft launched on 24 May 2026, carrying rice seeds and other experimental materials to China's space station. Since arriving, the three astronauts have collected and stored the first batch of rice samples as part of the mission's study into the molecular mechanisms behind multi-generational genetic stability and environmental adaptability of space-grown rice. This research supports the concept of in-situ production growing food and sustaining a self-sufficient life-support cycle in space without relying on resupply from Earth, seen as essential for future deep-space missions.

How China harvest the first rice crop grown in space?

1. The experiment aims to achieve, for the first time, two consecutive generations of rice grown entirely in orbit described as going "from seed to seed to seed", to study how prolonged microgravity exposure affects genetic stability. 
2. Scientists are working with two seed groups: one made up of ordinary seeds that have never left Earth, and another descended from the "space rice family" first harvested in orbit in 2022 and bred for three further generations on Earth.
3. The setup includes four experimental units with six seeds each, split into two groups based on reproduction method. 
4. One group is being grown through sexual reproduction, where harvested rice ears will be replanted to grow a second generation testing whether previously space-exposed seeds show better adaptability, a concept researchers call "transgenerational memory." 
5. The other group uses a ratooning method, where only the root system is kept after harvest, allowing new shoots to regrow from the stubble, letting scientists compare vegetative versus sexual reproduction in space conditions.

In 2022 China completed the world's first full life-cycle rice cultivation experiment in space 

This experiment builds on China's 2022 achievement, when six rice seeds were grown aboard the space station over 120 days, producing 59 first-generation space-grown seeds that returned to Earth with the Shenzhou-14 crew. The current mission takes that research further by attempting sustained, multi-generational cultivation in orbit.
