British novelist and former politician Jeffrey Archer has died at 86. His publisher, HarperCollins, confirmed that he passed away suddenly and peacefully at his home on Monday, 5 October 2026. No cause of death has been shared.
Archer wrote for almost five decades and sold over 300 million books worldwide. He was known for gripping thrillers and long family sagas. His best-known works include Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less (1976), Kane and Abel (1979), and The Clifton Chronicles.
According to HarperCollins, he is the only author to have reached the No. 1 bestseller spot in fiction, short stories and non-fiction. His stories were also adapted for the screen. The most famous example is the 1985 CBS miniseries Kane & Abel, starring Peter Strauss and Sam Neill. A film adaptation of Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less is also reportedly being developed by Paramount for the book's 50th anniversary.
Archer was a Member of Parliament for the Conservative Party and later served as the party's deputy chairman. He became a life peer in 1992 and sat in the House of Lords until he retired in July 2024.
His political life was hit by a major controversy. He had filed a libel case against the newspaper Daily Star in 1987. In 2001, he was convicted of perjury and perverting the course of justice linked to that case, and he served a prison sentence.
His last book, Adam and Eve, is due for release this month, around the time of his death. It will remain his final work for readers.
