Navin Ramgoolam appointed PM of Mauritius for 4th time

The President of Mauritius, Prithvirajsing Roopun, appointed Navin Ramgoolam as the new Prime Minister. This will be the fourth term for the 77-year-old Naveen Ramgoolam. Naveen Rangoolam was swept back to power 10 years after his coalition Alliance du Changement won a landslide victory in the recently held parliamentary election.

Naveen Rangoolam succeeds Pravind Jugnauth, who has been in power since 2017.

Landslide victory for Navin Ramgoolam Coalition 

Mauritius went to the polls on 10 November 2024 to elect a new parliament. The Parliament of Mauritius, known as the National Assembly, has 70 members. 

Of these, 62 are directly elected by the people, and 8 are nominated by the country’s Electoral Supervisory Commission.

The opposition alliance, Alliance du Changement, led by Navin Ramgoolam, trounced the ruling Lepep alliance, led by Pravind Jugnauth's Militant Socialist Movement Party. 

According to the Office of the Electoral Commissioner, the Alliance du Changement secured 62.6% of votes and 60 out of the 62 seats.

Fourth Term as Prime Minister for Navin Ramgoolam 

Navin Ramgoolam became the prime minister of Mauritius in 1995 and served until 2000. His next term began in 2005 and lasted until 2014.

Navin Ramgoolam is the leader of the Labour Party, which is a constituent of the Alliance du Changement coaliton.

Constitutional System in Mauritius 

Mauritius follows a parliamentary model of governance in which the President is the head of the state, and the Prime Minister is the Head of the Government.

In parliamentary democracy, the president appoints the prime minister, who is usually the leader of the party or coalition of parties commanding the majority in parliament.

The term of the Mauritius parliament is five years.
