India and Ghana have signed two MoUs to work together on agriculture and science, as announced on 7 October 2026. External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and Ghana's Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa witnessed the exchange.
South-South cooperation means developing countries sharing knowledge and technology with each other. This MoU gives Indian institutions like ICAR a chance to take their research to African farms.ย
The ICAR deal runs for five years. It covers joint research, scientific exchange, capacity building and the commercial use of farm technologies. Arima Farms Ltd., Ghana, is the commercial partner to CSIR-CRI.
The first phase deals with vegetable crops, mainly tomato. ICAR will help scale up proven technologies and introduce high-yielding tomato varieties to boost Ghana's own tomato production.
Both sides will swap scientists and technologists. They will also share germplasm, breeding materials, scientific information and methods. The MoU also plans joint research projects and links between research institutes.
A Joint Working Group with members from both institutes will track progress and guide the work. It will meet from time to time in New Delhi and Accra.
The two countries will work on processing and value addition of cassava, yam and other tuber crops. They will also cover post-harvest management, including cold storage, refrigerated transport, sorting, grading and processing. The aim is to cut post-harvest losses.
The MoU strengthens India's push for South-South and India-Africa cooperation. It lets Indian institutions like ICAR take their research and technologies abroad. It also links research with commercial use, which helps new technologies reach farmers. For Ghana, the expected gains are sustainable farm growth and better livelihoods.
