India breaks Jakarta Asian Games medals record tally of 70

India breaks Jakarta Asian Games medals record  tally of 70 Sport 5 min read

The Indian athletes created a new record in the 19th Asian Games being held in Hangzhou, China by winning 81 medals at the end of day11. In the previous 2018 Jakarta Asian Games, India had won its highest ever 70 medals. On 4th October 2023, Indian athletes won a total of 18 golds. This is a new record for India for the most gold medals in a single edition of the Asian Games. 

The previous best of 16 gold medals was achieved at the 2018 Asian Games at Jakarta, Indonesia . 

The 19th edition of the Asian Games officially began on September 23,2023 and will conclude on October 8,2023. At the end of day11,India has won 81 medals at the Asian Games 2023, 18 gold, 31 silver and 32 bronze.

Medal Winners for India on day 11 of the Hangzhou Asian Games 

Gold Medal Winners 

  • The 16th  gold medal  at the Hangzhou Asian Games was won by the mixed compound archery team, featuring Ojas Deotale and Jyothi Surekha Vennam. This was the first gold medal for India in the Archery event. The gold medal of the archers brought India's medal tally to 71 breaking its record of Jakarta Asian games. 
  • The 17th Gold medal of the Hangzhou Asian Game for India came through world champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra. His best throw of 88.88 metre fetched him the gold medal .
  • The 18th gold medal for India was won by the men's 4x400m relay team of Muhammad Anas Yahiya, Amoj Jacob, Muhammed Ajmal Variyathodi and Rajesh Ramesh. They also set a new national record of time 3:01.58 . The Indian team had won the silver medal at the 2018 Asian Games in this event.

Silver Medal Winners 

  • The Indian women's 4x400m relay team, featuring Vithya Ramraj, Aishwarya Mishra, Prachi and Subha Venkatesan, won the silver medal . Bahrain, secured the gold medal and Sri Lanka won the bronze medal.
  • Avinash Sable won the men's 5000m silver medal.
  • Harmilan Bains won a silver medal in the women's 800m. The 25-year-old Harmilan had also won a silver medal in the 1500m. Her mother Madhuri Singh had clinched silver in the 800m at the 2002 Asian Games in Busan.
  • The reigning world champion boxer Lovlina Borgohain won the silver medal in the women's 75kg final at the Asian Games 2023. She lost her final against China's Li Qian.
  • Kishore Kumar Jena won the silver medal in the men’s javelin throw event with a throw of 87.54m.

Bronze medal Winners 

  • Parveen Hooda won the bronze medal in the women's 57kg boxing event . She lost her semi final bout against  Lin Yu Ting of China. 
  • Manju Rani and Ram Baboo won a bronze medal in the 35 km race walk mixed team event.
  • Anahat Singh and Abhay Singh won a bronze medal in the  squash mixed event.
  • Sunil Kumar won bronze in the men’s Greco-Roman 87 kg wrestling event.  Sunil defeated Atabek Azisbekov of Kazakhstan in the bronze medal match. It was the first wrestling medal for India in the Hangzhou Asian Games . 

India finished the day 11 with 81 medals- 18 gold, 31 silver and 32 bronze.
