Every year 23 April is celebrated as 'English Language Day'. April 23 was chosen as 'English Language Day' because it is William Shakespeare's birthday and his death anniversary. Apart from being the most famous playwright of the English language, Shakespeare also had a huge influence on the modern English language.

History of English Language Day 2024:

  • English Language Day is celebrated to honour and remember the English poet and writer William Shakespeare. Shakespeare was born on 23 April 1564 while he died on 23 April 1616.
  • English Language Day was established in 2010 by the United Nations Department of Global Communications. English is one of the two working languages of the United Nations. The six official languages of the United Nations are English, Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish and Russian. Among these, English is most prominent.

Origin of English language:

  • English originated from a number of dialects brought by the Anglo-Saxon people who settled in England beginning in the 5th century. These are now called Old English. The Old Norse language of the Viking raiders has had a profound influence on the English language.
  • After the Norman Conquest, Old English developed into Middle English. For this, Norman vocabulary and spelling rules were used extensively. From there modern English developed. Even now the process of adopting foreign words from many languages as well as coining new words is continuing in English. A large number of English words, especially technical words, are based on ancient Greek and Latin roots.

Importance of English Language Day 2024:

  • About 1500 years ago, only three tribes were known to speak this language. It is the most important and widely spoken language, the number of English language speakers increases every year around the world. Moreover, it is also known as the most complex language. Currently, more than 75 countries have recognized English as their official language.
