The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet, Government of India, has appointed noted Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr Abhijat Sheth as the new chairperson of the National Medical Commission (NMC). He will replace Dr Suresh Gangadhar, who resigned from his post due to poor health.

Dr Suresh Gangadhar submitted his resignation to the government of India last October due to his poor health but the government asked him to continue till a suitable successor was found.

Tenure of Dr Abhijat Sheth as Chairperson of NMC

Dr Abhijat Sheth has been appointed for a term of four years from the date he assumed the charge or till attaining the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier.

About Dr Abhijat Sheth 

Dr Abhijat Sheth is a renowned Cardiothoracic Surgeon and is presently the President of the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences and is also the Director of Medical Services at Apollo Hospital in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences conducts the entrance examinations for the post-graduate and super-specialisation medical courses in the country.

He has practised both in India and the United Kingdom. He has published more than 20 articles in prestigious medical journals. 

About National Medical Commission (NMC)

The National Medical Commission is a statutory body that has been set up under the provisions of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, passed by the Parliament.

It replaced the Medical Council of India.

Ministry : It is under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Functions

  • It is the national medical regulatory body that regulates the  medical institutions, medical professionals ,and medical research in the country.
  • It helps the central government in making policies for a high-quality medical education in the country;
  • It also frames the codes and policies to promote professional ethics in the medical profession and in  patient care by medical practitioners;
  • It also makes guidelines for the charging of fees and other charges by the private medical for 50 % seats.
