The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has released shocking figures of deaths in road accidents in the cities of Uttar Pradesh. In Uttar Pradesh, the number of deaths in road accidents has increased in metros like Kanpur and Lucknow compared to Noida and Ghaziabad.
- Kanpur recorded the highest number of deaths among cities with a population of more than 10 lakh. Kanpur has been ranked fourth among the top four cities in this list:
- Delhi,
- Bengaluru
- Jaipur and
- Kanpur is at fourth place.
- 640 people died in Kanpur in the year 2022.
The situation in the state capital Lucknow is also very bad:
- Lucknow stood at 7th place in the year 2022 with 587 deaths in 1349 accidents.
- Agra ranked 9th, reporting 548 fatalities out of 1029 accidents.
- Ghaziabad ranks 16th with 363 deaths in 886 road accidents.
- Meerut ranks 21st with 345 deaths out of 926 accidents.
- Varanasi stood 26th with 294 deaths in 539 accidents.
Reduction in deaths in Ghaziabad and Meerut:
- Ghaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh, near Delhi, has recorded a decline in accidental deaths.
- As compared to 395 deaths in road accidents in the year 2021, this number decreased to 363 in 2022.
- In Meerut, 361 deaths were recorded in the year 2021, which came down to 345 in 2022.
Kanpur roads unsafe:
- Road safety report has declared the roads of Kanpur unsafe.
- Here the number of deaths in road accidents has increased by 7 percent.
- In 2021, the district recorded 598 fatalities in 1354 accidents.
- In the year 2022, 640 deaths were recorded in 1424 accidents.
Tamil Nadu tops in road accident cases:
- Tamil Nadu stood first in road accident cases in the year 2022.
- Tamil Nadu has remained at the first position in the country in the cases of road accidents since 2018.
- Madhya Pradesh ranks second in this list.
- Kerala reached third place.
- Uttar Pradesh ranks fourth in this list.
- Uttar Pradesh was at third place in four out of the last five years.
- During the Corona period 2020 and 2021, road accidents in UP were below 40 thousand. But again it is increasing continuously.

Uttar Pradesh ranks third in accidents on National Highways:
- Tamil Nadu is in first place in this matter. 18,972 road accidents were recorded on the national highway here. This was 12.5 percent of total national highway accidents.
- Kerala (in second place) recorded 17,627 accidents on national highways. 11.6 percent of total road accidents were recorded here.
- Uttar Pradesh ranks third in terms of road accidents on national highways. In the year 2022, 14,990 accidents were recorded on NH in Uttar Pradesh. This was 9.9 percent of the total road accidents on national highways in the country.
- Madhya Pradesh stood fourth with 13,860 cases.
Highest number of deaths in Uttar Pradesh:
- Uttar Pradesh has been recorded the highest number of deaths in road accidents.
- Tamil Nadu is in second place,
- Maharashtra is in third place and
- Madhya Pradesh is in fourth place.
- Last year, 8479 people died in accidents on the national highways of UP, which was 13.9 percent of the deaths on national highways across the country.
