Union Heavy Industries Minister Dr. Mahendra Nath Pandey on 2 February 2024 gave in-principle consent for the construction of Center of Excellence in Roorkee and Pantnagar, Uttarakhand. In this context, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had met Union Heavy Industries Minister Mahendra Nath Pandey in New Delhi.

About Center of Excellence (CoE):

  • A Center of Excellence is a body that provides leadership, best practices, research, support, training of trainers and skills training for a specific area. Center of Excellence literally means – 'a place where the highest standards are maintained.'
  • A center of excellence is a group, a shared facility or a unit that provides leadership, best practices, research, support or training for a certain area.
  • Due to its broad usage and vague legal precedent, a "center of excellence" may, in one context, have completely different characteristics than in another.
  • Its focus area can be a technology, a business concept, a skill, or a broader area of study. A center of excellence can also be created to revive stalled initiatives.
  • It can also refer to a network of institutions collaborating with each other to achieve excellence in a particular field.

Request for transfer of 492 acres of land of BHEL Haridwar:

  • Meanwhile, the Union Minister was requested to transfer the ownership of 492 acres of unused land owned by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Haridwar, to the Uttarakhand Government.
  • 457 acres of land owned by BHEL, Haridwar, located in Uttarakhand, situated at Integrated Industrial Estate, Haridwar, is vacant due to being unused for about 60 years.
  • An additional 35 acres of land owned by BHEL is available vacant and unused. It is located along the Haridwar railway line and is suitable for setting up a multi-modal logistics park.

Use of unused land for industrial expansion:

  • In order to promote investment in Uttarakhand, the said 457 acres of land can be transferred to the state government for industrial expansion.
  • Whereas 35 acres of land can be transferred to the state government for setting up Multi Model Logistics Park (MMLP).
  • This will give a new dimension to the investment in the state, and the youth will also get employment opportunities.

Uttarakhand stands on the standard of industrial development:

  • During this, CM Dhami said in the context of industrial development that Uttarakhand is continuously developing in the field of ease of doing business, investment promotion and start up.
  • The state of Uttarakhand continues to receive top ranks in the rankings issued by the Government of India.
