The 27th Malabar naval exercise 2023 featuring the navies of all four Quad countries India, the United States of America, Australia and Japan will be hosted by the Royal Australian Navy from 11 -21 August 2023 at /off Sydney.
The Indian Navy's indigenous frontline warships INS Sahyadri and INS Kolkata will participate in the MALABAR 2023 exercise along with ships and aircraft from the US Navy Japan Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF) and the Royal Australian Navy .The Japanese Navy is called the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.
The exercise provides an opportunity to the Indian Navy to enhance and demonstrate interoperability and also gain from the best practices in maritime security operations from its partner nations.
The first Malabar exercise was held between the Indian and the US Navy along the Malabar coast in Arabian Sea in 1992.
Japan became the permanent partner of the exercise from 2015 onwards .
Australia participated for the first time in 2007 and again in 2020 and 2021.
The 27th Malabar Naval exercise 2022 was held on 9 November 2022 off the Yokosuka island of Japan near the East China Sea.
