The Assam government will set up a National Centre of Excellence for Badminton in North Guwahati to nurture the budding badminton talent in the state .The decision was taken in the state cabinet meeting held in Guwahati under the chairmanship of the chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on 3rd August 2023.
Later the chief minister announced via Twitter that a 25 year memorandum of understanding(MoU) will be signed with the Badminton Association of India .The MoU can be extended further by 10 years .
Himanata Biswa Sarma is currently the President of Badminton Association of India.
The Centre will be set up at the Amingaon Indoor Stadium equipped with a world-class infrastructure, highly experienced national and international coaches and top class support facilities.
According to the Chief minister ,Amingaon Indoor stadium is the largest indoor badminton stadium in the country.
The operation and management will be handled by the Sports and Youth Welfare Department, Assam while the technical part will be handled by Badminton Association of India.
Some of the famous badminton players of Assam are Dipankar Bhattacharjee, Ashmita Chaliha.
