World Hindi Day 2024: Date, Theme, History Important Day 6 min read

World Hindi Day is celebrated every year on 10 January with the aim of giving special status to Hindi at the global level.

  • This year, the theme of World Hindi Day is "Hindi from traditional knowledge to artificial intelligence".
  • Whereas National Hindi Day is celebrated every year on 14 September.

World Hindi Day:

  • This day was celebrated for the first time in the year 2006 in the context of celebrating the anniversary of the first World Hindi Conference held in Nagpur on January 10, 1975.
  • It marks the day when Hindi was first spoken in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 1949.
  • The then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had inaugurated the first World Hindi Conference.
  • Former Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh had announced to celebrate 10 January 2006 as World Hindi Day every year.
  • The Vishwa Hindi Secretariat building is located in Port Louis, Mauritius.

Importance of World Hindi Day:

  • The objective of this day is to create awareness about the Indian language and promote it as a global language across the world.
  • It is also used to spread awareness about the use of the Indian language and issues related to the use and promotion of the Hindi language.

National Hindi Day:

  • 14 September is celebrated every year in India as National Hindi Day to mark the day Hindi was adopted as an official language by the Constituent Assembly of India in the year 1949.
  • Officially, the first Hindi Day was celebrated on 14 September 1953.

About the Hindi language:

  • Hindi is one of the 22 scheduled languages included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
  • Hindi was adopted as the official language of India by the Constituent Assembly of India on 14 September 1949.
  • Hindi is one of the two official languages of the central government. The second language is English.
  • The history of Hindi Diwas goes back to the early days of the Indian independence movement.

Provisions related to official language in the Constitution of India:

  • Provisions related to the official language have been included in Part 17 of the Indian Constitution from Articles 343 to 351.
  • Article 351 deals with 'Instructions for the development of the Hindi language'.
  • Article 120 (Language to be used in Parliament) - Subject to the provisions of Article 348 in Part 17, work in Parliament shall be transacted in Hindi or in English.
  • Article 343 (Official language of the Union) - The official language of the Union will be Hindi and the script Devanagari, the form of the numbers used for the official purposes of the Union, will be the international form of Indian numbers.

Government's efforts for the promotion of Hindi:

  • Hindi advisory committees have been formed in all 59 ministries since 2019.
  • So far, a total of 528 city official language implementation committees have been formed in India.
  • India has also constituted Municipal Official Language Implementation Committees in London, Singapore, Fiji, Dubai and Port-Louis.
  • A new tradition of the 'All India Official Language Conference' has also been started by the Official Language Department.
  • The first All India Official Language Conference was organized in Banaras on 13-14 November 2021 and the second All India Official Language Conference was organized in Surat on 14 September 2022.
  • The third All India Official Language Conference was held in Pune on 14 September 2023.
  • In 1960, the Central Hindi Directorate was established by the Government of India under the Ministry of Education.
  • The Indian Council for Cultural Relations has established 'Hindi Chairs' in various foreign universities/institutions abroad.
