Four Tigers from Uttarakhand will be Relocated to Rajasthan

The government in Uttarakhand has given permission to move four tigers to Rajasthan in response to a request from the western state's authorities. 

Meanwhile, Uttarakhand is also considering a similar request from Odisha to relocate three tigers.

• The selection process for the tigers has already begun, and they will be sourced from the buffer zone of forests, following the guidelines set by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). 
• The requests to translocate the tigers from Rajasthan and Odisha followed the successful operation of the tiger relocation project in Uttarakhand, which saw four big cats transferred from the Corbett Tiger Reserve to Rajaji Tiger Reserve.
• In addition, a fifth tiger will be moving to the Motichur range and Uttarakhand will share its relocation expertise with the forest personnel in Rajasthan.
• This initiative is a part of a larger effort to conserve wildlife, with a focus on preserving genetic diversity and expanding the habitats of tigers. The goal is to relocate tigers from areas with high populations to those with fewer or no tigers, in order to promote healthier tiger populations and ecosystems.
• The Uttarakhand government's willingness to assist other states in relocating tigers and imparting relocation skills is a noteworthy example of interstate collaboration in conservation efforts. It has the potential to set a precedent for future wildlife management and conservation projects.

National Tiger Conservation Authority

In 2005, a body was created under the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change to help conserve tigers. 

This body was established based on the recommendations of the Tiger Task Force and was made possible by the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972. The body has specific powers and functions assigned to it, with the goal of strengthening tiger conservation efforts.

Rajaji Tiger Reserve

Rajaji National Park, located in Haridwar (Uttarakhand) along the foothills of the Shivalik range, is a tiger reserve that was established in 1983. It was created by combining three sanctuaries in Uttarakhand - Rajaji, Motichur and Chila. The park was named after the famous freedom fighter, C. Rajgopalachari, who was also known as "Rajaji."
