Rabindra Nath Mahato of the ruling party, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), was unanimously re-elected Speaker of the 6th Jharkhand Legislative Assembly on 10 December 2024. Rabindra Nath Mahato was the Speaker of the previous 5th Jharkhand Legislative Assembly also.
Rabindra Nath Mahato is the first person to be elected Speaker of the Assembly for two consecutive terms.
Inder Singh Namdhari is the only other person who has been the Speaker of the Jharkhand assembly twice but not for two consecutive terms.
The first session of the newly constituted 6th Jharkhand Legislative Assembly commenced on December 9, 2024. On the first day of the session, Jharkhand Governor Santosh Gangwar appointed Prof.Stephen Marandi of the JMM as the Protem Speaker.
The function of the Protem speaker was to administer the oath to the newly elected 81 members of the 6th Jharkhand Legislative Assembly and conduct an election for the post of the Speaker.
The Jharkhand chief minister, Hemant Soren, proposed the name of Rabindra Nath Mahato as the Speaker of the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly and was seconded by the JMM MLA, Mathura Prasad Mahato.
The opposition, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), decided not to nominate a candidate for the post. Hence, Rabindra Nath Mahato was elected unopposed.
During the recent Jharkhand Legislative Assembly election, Rabindra Nath Mahato retained his Nala assembly seat by defeating BJP's Madhav Chandra Mahato by 10,483 votes.
The state of Jharkhand was established on 15 November 2000 as per the provision of the Bihar Reorganisation Act 200 passed by the Parliament.
The Jharkhand Legislative Assembly has 81 members, and Inder Singh Namdahri was its first Speaker.
