Sourav Ganguly Named As Brand Ambassador Of West Bengal Appointment 5 min read

The West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, appointed former BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) president Sourav Ganguly as the brand ambassador of West Bengal on 21 November 2023. Mamata Banerjee announced the appointment of the former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly in her inaugural address at the seventh Bengal Global Business Summit in Kolkata.

Seventh Bengal Global Business Summit

The seventh two-day Bengal Global Business Summit is being held in Kolkata on 21 and 22 November 2023. Several hundred companies from more than 25 countries, including the United States of America, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Japan, Australia, France, and Germany are participating in the Business Summit.

In her address, the chief minister announced several new policies, including plans to double the state's exports, modernise its logistics and promote renewable energy manufacturing.

Luxembourg as the Partner Country 

The small European country of Luxembourg is the partner country of the seventh Bengal Global Business Summit meeting. Luxembourg was represented by its Ambassador to India, Peggy Frantzen.

Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS)

The Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) is the flagship business event of the West Bengal Government. The summit aims to bring together corporate leaders, business delegations, entrepreneurs, academia, and think tanks from around the globe to promote the state as a promising investment and business destination.

About Sourav Ganguly 

  • Sourav Ganguly is a cricketer from West Bengal who made his One Day International ( ODI) debut in January 1992 against West Indies in Australia.
  • Saurav Ganguly made his Test debut at Lords against England in 1996. He scored a century in the match.
  • In 2000, he became the captain of the Indian cricket team after Sachin Tendulkar resigned from the post. He remained captain till 2005, when Rahul Dravid replaced him.
  • Under his captaincy, India reached the finals of the World Cup in 2003 for the first time since 1983 but eventually lost to the Australians.
  • He retired from International cricket in 2008.
  • In 2019, Sourav Ganguly became the 35th President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. In 2022, Roger Binny became the 36th President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
  • Sourav Ganguly was honoured with the Arjuna Award in 1998 for his outstanding performances in Indian cricket.
  • In 2004, Sourav Ganguly received the Padma Shri Award.
  • The West Bengal government conferred the Banga Bibhushan Award to Sourav Ganguly in 2013.
