Russian Presidential Elections, Vladimir Putin Won for Fifth Term Person in News 4 min read

Russian President Vladimir Putin has won a historic fifth term in the presidential polls, securing a landslide victory. Mr. Putin has claimed his victory is a sign of the country's trust and hope in him.

  • After counting 75% of the votes, Russia's electoral commission has said Putin was leading with 87.14% of the vote. Second place went to the Communist party candidate, Nikolai Kharitonov.
  • The government claims that the turnout was the highest in history at 74% of the electorate. Putin's previous highest result came in 2018, where he purportedly earned 76.7% of the vote with a 67.5% turnout.
  • Despite the anticipated outcome of Putin's re-election, Russia's opposition made an effort to demonstrate their own influence. Multiple polling stations in Moscow and other cities saw significant lines as citizens responded to Navalny's widow's call to action.
  • The Kremlin's electoral system worked hard to increase voter turnout and Putin's percentage of the vote during his attempt to gain public support for his war in Ukraine and fifth term as president.
  • This effort was demonstrated by the release of results typically seen in Russia's most authoritarian regions, such as Chechnya.
